PA Resources in society

The petroleum industry is an important factor in a country’s economic development and oil has a significant effect on GDP. PA Resources therefore contributes to the development of our host countries and to improving living conditions for the local populations of the countries in which we operate. We provide jobs and tax revenues in Africa and Europe alike. The Group pays royalties on barrels of oil produced as well as income tax to the governments of the countries concerned.

Water is life

PA Resources’ sponsorship project in the Republic of Congo includes sinking water wells and installing water tanks in three villages in the country.

Aims:

  • To provide easier access to water for those living in and around the villages
  • To contribute to a 50 percent reduction in diseases suffered by the local population as a result of drinking untreated water
  • To help eliminate the water burden: women and young girls have to walk for hours to bring water to their homes

    Activities:
  • Preparatory information activities and construction planning
  • Sinking of water wells
  • Installation of water tanks
  • Training the villages’ water committees in the use and maintenance of the water tanks
  • Providing the population with information on how the tanks should be used, how to prevent diseases caused by drinking untreated water and on hygiene and health

We also contribute experience and knowledge that helps develop the oil industry. Sharing knowledge with our host country is an important element of the licence agreements we have with West African countries. Another example is the formation of the Greenland Oil Industry Association (GOIA) in 2009. PA Resources is one of seven founders of the Association, which will work to encourage safe drilling and production activities with the maximum possible consideration for the environment, to increase knowledge and communicate best practice. GOIA will promote the development of a competitive oil and gas industry in Greenland through cooperation and dialogue with those concerned.
In West Africa and North Africa we also provide financial aid to social projects that are run either by ourselves or by the operators of the oil licences. Among other things, we support education systems, health care, work with disabled children and the construction of water wells.

Examples of social projects in Africa in 2009

  • The GEGED (Guinea Equatorial Geoscience program) exchange programme in Equatorial Guinea for students at the University of Malabo, who spend a period studying at the University of South Carolina in the USA
  • Building of a school at Mbam in Equatorial Guinea
  • Purchase of medical equipment for hospitals in Malabo and Luba in the Republic of Congo
  • Health project at Ecua Salud in Equatorial Guinea
  • Purchase of dental equipment in Equatorial Guinea
  • Support for organisations providing assistance to disabled children in Tunisia
